Psychological, Mental and Physical Benefits Of Sports

Sports do not build character. They reveal it’– Heywood Bround

Many People believe that Sports is an old nemesis to academic advancement and that people with a keen interest in sports cannot excel in academics. This folklore surrounding sports has made parents reluctant and paranoid to let their children devote time to games.

We are a long way from breaking down this presumed rivalry and change the mindsets of the parents but it is ironical that to break the tug-of-war we need more children to take up games and athletics but they are not allowed to.

Sports requires a tremendous amount of energy, this leads parents to believe that this will distract student-athletes but on the contrary, physical activities also require organizational skill, discipline and enormous amounts of learning which are pre-requisites for performing well in studies too. Also, many qualities that students acquire while indulging in outdoor activities are applicable within the classroom.

Sports Education is fundamental for a holistic growth as it provides a much-needed break from academics and is a source to release all that pent-up energy validating the ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ philosophy.

Benefits of Sports Education can be broadly classified into:

• Psychological and Social Benefits Of Sports Education

Develops Self Confidence
Sports teaches one to believe in himself which when coupled with small gestures like a pat on the back, high fives, and praises from the coach, can add to an athlete’s self-esteem and confidence.

Accepting Defeat
A game on the field teaches the bitter truth that we can’t win all the time. The sooner a child learns this the better it is for them. It also teaches them to take the loss in their stride. Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn!

Discipline
This is the most important quality that every single successful person tends to have. This is one trait that sports can easily inculcate in a student. Discipline on the playground also becomes the basis of a systematic and organized life, right from waking up on time, to studying, to managing other tasks.

Leadership
From aspiring to be a captain to become the captain for your team, the whole process teaches one the essential ability of how to talk, manage people, taking one for the team. Leadership isn’t about being on the top, it’s about being accountable for the responsibility assigned to you. Many times the fate of the whole team rests in the spilt-second decision that you have to take.

Teamwork
There is no place for ‘I’ in the team. You could argue that there is no ‘We’ either but that’s the beauty of sports, it teaches you how to play to each others’ strengths, amplifying the strengths in the process. The team has to work towards a common goal in unison and unless that happens, the team is deemed to fail. Like at work, in sports too you can’t pick who you want to play with.

3Ps- Persistence, Patience, and Practise
Persistence, Patience, and Practise are the founding cornerstones for any sport and also life in general. One consistently needs to pursue the goals no matter how many times he fails. You need to pick yourself up and start over. Playing a sport teaches you not to get irritated or annoyed with happenings as sometimes it takes a while for results to show. Practicing diligently fetches you desired outcomes. All of this proves beneficial in all aspects of life, be it academics or career.

• Physical Benefits Of Sports Education

Regularity in Exercise
Asking children to exercise can prove futile but if you tell them to go outside and play, they are more than happy to do so. Reason being, children enjoy activities that are fun and engaging. When they are playing a sport they are getting their share of exercise but in an entertaining way.

Healthy Growth
Regular physical workout of the bones and muscles leads to a healthy growth, exempting them from the modern-day lifestyle diseases and illnesses which they usually would have been susceptible to. It also leads to increased cardiovascular fitness as heart, like any another muscle in the body needs regular exercise to stay in its peak. A healthy body breeds a healthy mind and has a positive effect on your performance level in school and at work.

Improves Energy Levels
Playing sports regularly leads to the building of stamina and endurance over time. This leads to a significant increase in energy levels which are quite evident after a period of time. Correct channeling of this energy leads to increased productivity on and off the ground.

Improved Sleep Cycle
All the physical exertion will lead to tiredness in the night which translates into a deep and sound sleep at night. Athletes realize they can’t function efficiently without the stipulated 8-hour sleep and encourages them to sleep on time. A well-rested body performs at its optimal best.

In our opinion, athletes should be as celebrated as much as scholars are. The child excelling in academics and the child exhibiting distinction in sports should be given equal importance. If the vision is adopted and executed well, there will definitely be a day when both the awards are bagged by the same student.

4 amazing benefits of Summer Camp for your Child

In an era where even kids are heavily involved in the digital world, summer camp activities can be the perfect escape. Along with academic learning, educational activities for kids are an essential part of their development that you must not let them miss out on. The benefits of summer camp activities are countless, from life lessons beyond the four walls of the classroom and the importance of physical exercise to appreciating nature, building confidence and leadership skills.

Every child has a unique personality, and we, at KCPS Nawanshahr, plan a list of summer camp activities at our school that is beneficial for every kid. Summer camp activities are the perfect mix of learning and fun, after which your child will always come back having a great time and with lots of stories and lessons to share. The reason children want to go to a summer camp is that it’s fun, and the positive outcomes just happen to come as a bonus along the way.

Here are some of the many benefits of summer camp activities:

Improves Social Skills

If you have ever been to a summer camp, you must reminisce about the friendships and memories you have created there. Summer camps offer an ideal environment for your kids to socialize and explore their independence. At camp, children get to boost their self-confidence and face the consequences of their own problems without parental help, which is necessary at some point to face the real world. The interactive summer camp activities help your children develop emotional intelligence by getting along with others, empathizing, and connecting with them.

Emphasizes Physical Health

Many parents worry about the screen time their children indulge in these days. The rise of obesity due to lack of physical fitness has taken over, and summer camp is a way to increase your child’s interest in outdoor activities. Your kids stay busy and physically active while on a camp instead of lying on a couch all summer. It also helps inculcate habits of punctuality and regular exercise. With numerous health benefits, including healthy body weight and an active lifestyle, they are even better able to concentrate, perform better in school, and have fewer behavioral problems.

Developing Leadership Skills

Learning how to take the lead is one of the most important lessons in today’s competitive world. Summer camp activities teach your children to lead a team and respect individual opinions, along with imbibing decision–making skills. It gradually helps build leadership qualities that help them go a long way. Self-confidence and being able to empathize with others are essential aspects of being a good leader. We, at KCPS Nawanshahr, know how to plan summer camp activities that will benefit the student‘s life all along, allowing them to explore their true selves.

Fosters Teamwork

Summer camp activities enable your kids to work together as a team with peers and learn problem-solving skills. They get to develop a sense of shared understanding and acceptance. Whether kids are building a campfire together, playing a game, or preparing a meal, campers learn to accomplish their goals together. Learning new hobbies will teach your child to become a better team player and come up with better problem–solving techniques.

Fun Learning with Summer Camps

Summer camp is an excellent opportunity to let your kids explore new things and build new hobbies. Who knows what interest may turn into their future career choice?

Living in a world where kids learn how to operate smartphones better than their elders, it is time we make them familiar with outdoor games, which involves more physical and mental activity. It helps in their cognitive development and leads to a healthier lifestyle.

At KCPS Nawanshahr, learning and fun go hand in hand as we organize interactive summer camps for our students every year. We curate thoughtfully chosen summer camp activities such as podcasting, swimming, tennis, badminton, gymnastics, creative writing and many more. Our purpose behind this is to motivate every student to find something of their interest and pursue it. It is no longer the scenario where sports had no scope; there are equal or even more incentivized opportunities in the sports sector as there is in the digital sphere.

Make sure your child has something he is passionate about besides academics.

Don’t let your child fall under the age–old phrase- “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

How to Motivate Kids to Read

If we had to choose one of the best things in life, many of us would choose reading.

Reading also allows us to become part of so many different, exciting stories. It is one of life’s pleasures, which apart from being a leisure activity, is also a great habit that brings many benefits to children and adults.

Reading has many benefits, such as improving brain functions or reducing stress levels. Moreover, it improves comprehension, writing skills, and helps us to expand our vocabulary and is useful when it comes to learning new languages.

The best way to make reading become a habit is by sharing this passion with your children from a very early age. This way, little ones see it as an everyday activity that they can enjoy alone or in company.

Weekly Reading Sessions in the KCPS Library

At KCPS,  reading practices have an essential place in our educational program. That’s why we host weekly reading sessions in our library for our Primary and our Early Years students. This time in the library introduces students to the pleasure of reading and encourages students to become more interested in this pleasant activity because set off on exciting adventures with extraordinary characters through stories from all over the world. The KCPS library holds more than 5000 books in different languages including English.

Each academic year, we remind everyone about the importance of reading by celebrating KCPS Book Week, during which we bring the world of books closer to our students through exciting, fun, and cultural activities.

For one week, reading is given special focus at KCPS. This way, we help our students feel the pleasure and joy of reading, making it their favorite leisure activity. However, not all children show interest in reading and prefer to spend their free time on activities that have nothing to do with books.

This issue worries many parents, especially those who do love reading. What can we do to encourage children who don’t seem interested in reading?

How to Encourage Good Reading Habits

The Librarian at KCPS thinks that “one of the best ways to motivate children to read is to give them choices. Often, we want to guide our children to a certain genre or topic. If we let children choose their materials, it helps increase their interest level”. Also, she considers that one of the best ways to motivate children to read is to read to them at night. “While parents often do this for younger children, we stop doing this as children get older; even pre-teens enjoy having chapters read to them!”

For her, reading has a lot of benefits for children, that’s why we should encourage an appetite for reading. The librarian points out that, “In addition to increasing vocabulary and knowledge, reading helps decrease stress and improve memory. And,” continues, “reading books in more than one language is very beneficial for kids because reading books in a second language is an excellent way to learn grammar rules.”

Three Things to Consider While Seeking Admission In Grade XI

Three Things to Consider While Seeking Admission In Grade XI

By Grade X, you’ve had enough time to figure out which subjects you excel in and love studying, versus which ones you dislike. It’s critical to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses at this point in the decision-making process. However, only a small percentage of students know exactly what they want to do with their lives and which subject stream they need to choose, to succeed.

On the other hand, the majority of students require assistance in determining their future steps. A small percentage of people make decisions based on what their friends and parents believe is best for them. Make a call to our Career counsellor via the Admission Cell, for making the right decision.

Here are three simple things you can do today, to assist you to make the best decision possible for tomorrow’s success.

Step 1: You’re Your Best Support

Your parents, school counsellors and even your friends are all great when it comes to seeking advice. But, no one knows what you’re truly passionate about better than you do. Hence, you need to become acutely self aware of what you want to do in your life. A good place to start is by making a list of::

  • Subjects you would like to continue
  • Subjects you would like to discontinue
  • Subjects you are confused or unsure of

Once this is done, you need to ask yourself more specific questions for the subjects that you’re confused about. Some of these questions can be:

Do I really like the subject?
Am I good at it and could I be better if I had the right guidance and coaching?
Am I willing to spend time improving my knowledge and understanding of the subject, and get good grades in class 11?

Step 2: Pick A Stream

Based on the answers to the questions above, the next step is to pick a stream that allows you to study the subjects you like the most. At KC Public School, we offer three prominent streams:

Science

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics ( Standard and Applied )and Biology are the core subjects in the Science stream. Medicine, Engineering and Technology, and Pure Sciences are just a few of the lucrative, traditional job opportunities available after the Science stream. If students want to leave this stream after high school, they can enrol in the Commerce and Humanities Stream for undergraduate studies.

Commerce

Business Studies, Economics, Accountancy, and Mathematics (Standard and Applied) are the core subjects of the Commerce stream. Students interested in professions in finance, accounting, investment banking, and entrepreneurship, among other fields, often choose Commerce with Mathematics. In India, students who pick the Commerce stream are unable to pursue undergraduate courses in the Science stream. Humanities subjects, on the other hand, are an option.

Humanities

History, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, and Political Science are examples of fundamental Social Science subjects in the Humanities stream. Students in the humanities can pursue jobs in areas such as mass communication, journalism, writing, filmmaking, community service and teaching, to name a few. In India, students who pursue Humanities as a major are unable to pursue Science or Commerce as a major.

Step 3: Take Your Long Term Career Goals Into Consideration

This is a difficult but necessary step. Consider your future and move backwards from there to where you are now. You should consider what is most essential to you. Do you like structure and working alone, or do you prefer working as part of a group? Do you like routine or flexibility in your life? These are crucial questions that will help you determine the type of job you want to pursue and then the appropriate Subject stream to get you there. There’s no doubt that seeking admissions in Grade XI can be a daunting task, as the decisions you take now can impact your entire life. Once you’ve made a decision about which stream you want to pursue, our support staff will gladly help you and support you to not only excel in school, but also with further education.

So, if you want admissions for Grade XI, consider filling out our inquiry form or speak to our Admission Cell at 8872088440
